A Phenomenological Analysis of "Emotion - Mind" in the Huangdi's Canon of Medicine

  • Based on the close relationship between the Huangdi's canon of medicine, Taoism, and Heidegger's the existing phenomenology, we analyze and explain the "emotion - mind" in the Huangdi's canon of medicine by integrating Heidegger's existing phenomenology and local phenomenology. The "emotion" and "mind" from the Huangdi's canon of medicine and the Taoism are corresponded to Heidegger's "concealment" emotion and "de-concealment" emotion, respectively. In terms of "emotion-mind" as whole, it is the unity of the concealed and revealed state of real-life activities. However, in terms of separate "emotion-mind", the "emotion" from the Huangdi's canon of medicine and Taoism is in the original position, which is the upperseat concept of "mind". Thus, the "mind" is derived from and belongs to the "emotion", which is the subordinate concept of it. The views that "emotion" is placed under the category of "mind" or "mind" is used as a more important concept in Chinese medicine psychology should be further discussed.
