The Origin, Development, and Characteristics of Tongzhou Medical School

  • From the perspective of regional medical schools, this article elaborates on the inheritance and development of traditional Chinese medicine in Nantong. Nantong's regional culture is characterized by the integration of north and south, inclusiveness and connectivity, respect for literature and virtue, a collection of talented individuals, striving for excellence and daring to be the first. Under this background, Tongzhou medical school was able to sprout and develop, giving rise to influential medical practitioners since the Ming Dynasty. The Tongzhou medical school is at the forefront of inheriting and developing traditional Chinese medicine surgery, establishing new theories, exploring folk medicine, and offering traditional Chinese medicine education. It is unique and distinctive. Organizing, excavating, and studying the development trajectory of the Tongzhou medical school, as well as the academic ideas, clinical experience, and medication characteristics of the medical community, is of great significance for the development of traditional Chinese medicine in Nantong.
