Abstract:
Using the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) constitution scale and the Egna Minnen Barndoms Uppfostran (EMBU), 914 freshmen from a medical college in Fujian Province were studied to investigate the correlation between TCM constitution types and parenting styles, and to provide a reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment of diseases combined with preventive interventions for biased constitution. The results showed that there were significant correlations between dimensions of parenting styles and nine TCM constitution types (
r=0.067~0.281,
P < 0.01). Different parenting styles influenced different TCM constitution types, among which, father's love and understanding was a protective factor for many biased constitutions (except yin deficiency and special endowment). However, father's overprotection was a risk factor for many biased constitutions (except special endowment). The effect of father's overprotection on the constitution types including qi deficiency, blood stasis, and qi constraint was greater (
β=0.177,
β=0.177,
β=0.165, respectively,
P < 0.01). The study suggests that family is the first environment in which an individual grows up, and thus parenting style might influence the individual's TCM constitution type.
