Conflict, Adaptation and Coexistence: "Introducing Chinese Medicine into Hospitals" in the 1950s

Abstract: In the first half of the 20th century, western-style hospitals embedded in China's medical landscape gradually gained widespread acceptance by the government and the public, while the space for the practice of Chinese medicine was squeezed. As one of the main measures to improve the work of Chinese medicine, the process of "introducing Chinese medicine into hospitals" in the 1950s would be naturally accompanied by conflict and resistance. After several years of conflict and adaptation, the "introduction of Chinese medicine into hospitals" spread from point to plane, and newly-built Chinese medical hospitals and the establishment of Chinese medical departments in general hospitals became the main methods of "introducing Chinese medicine into hospitals" in new China. The "scientification" of Chinese medical treatment activities became the inevitable result.
